Historical Impact and Leadership in Disability Policy
Fedcap’s commitment to advocacy has been evident throughout its history. We played a pivotal role in the passage of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which laid the foundation for civil rights protections for people with disabilities and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
Additionally, our leadership helped establish the Javits-Wagner-O’Day program (now known as AbilityOne), which continues to provide competitive employment opportunities for 45,000 people with disabilities across the U.S.
Our current CEO, Christine McMahon, has further solidified our leadership in the disability space. In 2016, McMahon was appointed to the U.S. Department of Labor's National Advisory Committee on Increasing Competitive Integrated Employment for Individuals with Disabilities, highlighting our ongoing influence in shaping disability employment policies.
In 2017, Fedcap hosted a highly impactful solution series on Disabilities and Employment, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, and advocates to explore innovative strategies for increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities. The insights from this series have been published in a booklet, available for reference, which highlights best practices and policy recommendations.
